Requesting Access to VMCloud

Last updated: 04/03/2021

As VMCloud is a private cloud service, access is restricted and only granted in specific scenarios. Projects, previously known as tenants, are organizational units that gather resources (servers, routers, etc.) and users are assigned to them. A user can be assigned to several projects.

Projects are created depending on each request and access to it is granted to the users specified on such request. A project is created for a specific purpose/context, it may be for an IT service or a research project for example. There are no individual projects.

The Request

In order to be granted a project, the person responsible for the research project or service must send an email to si@tecnico.ulisboa.pt, detailing these requirements:

  • Project name - This name must be associated to the service or research project and must be recognizable. Ex. dallas, fenix.
  • Cost Center / Project (IST Accounting) - The cost center or project registered in the IST Accounting services where the costs of the use of the platform will be charged to.
  • Expiration Date - A fixed date where the project resources will not be necessary anymore. After such date and before any deletion, we will always confirm with the project owners that no resource is being used before deleting the project. This date can be extended later on if justifiable.
  • Users - The Tecnico ID’s of the users (i.e. istxxxxxx) with access to the project. Users may be added or removed at any time on request.
  • Project Quota - Amount of available resources for virtual machine creation. It can be increased or decreased later on request:
    • No. Instances - Maximum number of instances
    • No. VCPU - Maximum number of virtual CPUs for all instances
    • No. Volumes - Maximum number of storage volumes
    • Total Disk Size - Maximum GB size for all disks/volumes in the project
    • Total RAM Size - Maximum GB size for all instances’ memory
  • Region - You can disclose if you want your resources to be in Taguspark, Alameda or both. Note that if you choose both, project quota is not shared across regions, therefore the requested quota is essentially duplicated so each region will have the specified quota.
  • API key option (Yes/No) - This option is required if the API is used. The API key may be created later on request.

It is also advised to mention the purpose of the creation of the project, so that we can better advise and review the request. After the review, we may reduce the desired quota if such quota cannot be fulfilled or we may advise an increase of quota considering the mentioned purpose.
